On Monday, April 18, 2011 the Board of
Directors and Officers of the English Setter Awards met via
conference call to discuss matters of concern dealing with the
process of awarding points and criteria for eligibility. A quorum
of board members was in attendance with nine of the ten Directors
present on the call.
A matter was brought to the board's attention that a conflict
existed in published criteria for qualified points. One such
document dated back to 1986 with the creation of the award and the
other a more current listing and posting of qualifying trials. The
fundamental issue at hand was whether or not a Derby Dog could
accumulate points for the Derby Category Award by placing in an
Adult Stake. The case in point for this year existed with the
placement of a Derby Dog in an Open All Age Championship as
Runner-up.
The board concluded by unanimous decision that points will only be
awarded in the Category designated by the Stake as advertised in
the American Field. So as a point of clarification, points earned
in a Qualifying All Age Stake will only be awarded in the All Age
Category irrespective of the age of the dog or the status of the
handler. Such is also the case in regards to Shooting Dogs. Derby
points will only be awarded in a qualifying Derby Stake in the
category designated by the Stake be it All Age or Shooting Dog.
This policy will carry forward pertaining to All qualifying
Stakes.
As for the case in point brought into question for this trial year
pertaining to Skydancer Dancing Bull, points will be awarded to
the dog for his placement as RU-Ch in the Open All Age Category
but no points will be awarded for the Derby Category. The Board of
Directors does take note of this fine placement and congratulates
the performance of this young Setter.
The Board also discussed and agreed to publish a listing of trials
and stakes that will qualify for Setter Award Points for all
categories for the coming season and all lists will be posted on
the website.
Questions regarding Cover Dog Trial eligibility can be directed to
Ryan Frame. Questions and/or submissions of stakes regarding
Horseback eligibility can be directed to Joe Cincotta. The Board
will be meeting again mid-summer at a date to be determined at
which time a listing of English Setter Award points trials will be
confirmed for the upcoming year.

The 2010 awards |
The plans are that we will have two awards
presentations this year. The Flanagan tribute will be during the
Orange County Field Trial which will start on August 25th. We will
plan to have our dinner Saturday August 28th. The clubhouse at
the grounds is not large enough to hold our anticipated guests so
the awards will need to be in a local restaurant- to be
determined.
Joe Cincotta will do the tribute for Dr. Flanagan and impact of
the Grouse Ridge Setters to the English Setter field trial breed.
The date for the western presentations is Saturday, September
25th . The location is the field trial clubhouse on the
Robertson's ranch in Payette, Idaho. This is during the Northwest
Chukar Championship.
Herb Anderson will highlight importance of the Tekoa Mountain
Sunrise blood line to field trial setters as well as the record 41
times Richie Robertson has handled dogs which won or were
runner-up for the John O'Neall All Age or the Herman Smith Derby
awards during the western presentation. He had one Bill Conlin
derby win also.
